Lean Academy is AstraZeneca’s global lean management training and coaching organisation. To expand the academy’s capability to deliver coaching in the Asia Pacific region, AstraZeneca required a purpose-built training facility co-located with the company’s Macquarie Park manufacturing operations.
EPB was engaged to design a building that would provide the space and facilities required, embody the core Lean principles and connect with existing infrastructure on the site.
Working with the global Lean team, EPB designed a 480m2 building that supports the Lean program with intelligent face-to-face and remote learning areas. The building design includes a variety of spaces for coaching and training, collaborative areas, full kitchen and bathroom facilities.
An important aspect of the design brief was to create an open, airy feel with a strong connection to the outdoors through building orientation and large windows that frame the beautiful Australian native landscaped gardens.
Following completion of the design phase, EPB managed the development approval process and all construction works, including off-site prefabrication of building modules, on-site construction works including hard and soft landscaping. In line with AstraZeneca’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, EPB also designed and installed a 50kW solar PV system that powers the building with renewable electricity.
All onsite construction works, including delivery of modules, landscaping and solar installation were completed in 14 weeks, enabling the project to be successfully commissioned in February 2021, six months from the start of construction works.
